The principle that allows BYD electric cars to perform an on-the-spot U-turn hinges on having each of the wheels on either side of the vehicle rotate at the same speed but in opposite directions. This synchronized but opposite rotation enables the car to pivot around its center point, effectively allowing it to spin in place.
Historically, in fuel-powered vehicles or electric cars with a shared axle design, such precise control was impossible due to mechanical constraints preventing one side from moving forward while the other moved backward. This made performing a “tank turn” particularly challenging for traditional vehicles.
Introduce to BYD’s “Yisifang” System
On January 5, 2023, the “Surpass the Galaxy” Yangwang brand and technology launch event took place in Shenzhen. The event introduced the new high-end automotive brand Yangwang and its groundbreaking core technology, “Yisifang”. The essence of “Yisifang” is a power system centered around independent four-motor drive, comprising dual motors at both the front and rear, a central controller, and blade batteries, suitable for both pure electric and hybrid platforms.

This four-motor system allows for independent control of each motor. Coupled with a comprehensive redesign considering the unique characteristics of new energy vehicles from perception, decision-making, to execution, the platform enables millisecond-level adjustments to the dynamics of the four wheel ends. This results in enhanced control over the car’s body posture.
By independently managing the power output and rotational direction of each wheel, vehicles equipped with the “Yisifang” platform can achieve on-the-spot turning, lateral movement, sustained operation after a tire blowout, and even emergency flotation mode.
